Professional Resume 27/2/2024

Dr. Athanasios (or Thanos) B. Bourlinos (b. 1973) holds BSc (1991-1995), MSc (1997-1999) and PhD (1999-2002) degrees in Chemistry from Athens University, Greece. He spent 2 years (2002-2004) as post-doctoral fellow at the Materials Science & Engineering Department, Cornell University (USA) and 7 years (2002 & 2005-2011) as research associate at the Institute of Materials Science, NCSR “Demokritos” (Greece). In 2011 he moved to the Physics Department, University of Ioannina, where he successively served as research associate (2011-2012), Assistant Professor (2012-2020) and Associate Professor (2020-2024). He currently holds the position of Professor in the same department since 2024 (dedicated to the memory of my very beloved father Vasilis). His research area focuses on the synthesis or surface modification, physical characterization and physicochemical properties of nanoscale materials (porous, layered, nanoparticles) with emphasis on carbon nanostructures. Carbon materials of interest include amorphous carbon, carbon dots, nanodiamonds, fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, carbon nanocones, graphite and graphene/fluorographene derivatives. The studied properties pertain to magnetism, electrical conductivity, photoluminescence, non-linear optical response, catalysis, hypergolics, hydrogen storage, gas sorption, rheology, biomedical applications and environment. He has a total of 160 publications acknowledged with 19,282 citations and h-index 53 (Google Scholar, last update 27/2/2024), placing him in high rankings among several international lists (e.g., Stanford’s list & Research.com). He has served in several committees as well as, as director of Section IV (2020-2022) and Vice Head of the department (2022-2024)
